Skippin’ Utah

My name is Adam but folks call me Bubba.

I have caddied every Nationwide event this year, but I’m skippin Utah.  I have been on the road 3 or 4 weeks each month for the past 6 months.  By skippin Utah I have 3 weeks in a row off.  It has been great to be home in Macon and see friends and my boys.  We spent 5 days last week at Mexico Beach, Fla and have been hangin a lot this week as well.

I am hopin that a switch in caddies will help Little Bro.  Remember that scene in Tin Cup where Cheech tells Tin to take all the change out of his left pocket and put it in his right pocket?  And, lo and behold, that cures him of the shanks.  Same thing here.  Little Bro is a proven outstanding player, and it’s a mystery why we have struggled so much this year, but maybe we just need to switch it up.  If a new caddy changes his mentality or changes something, I’m all for it.  I just want to see some red numbers on the board by the name Henley!  Do it Dusty!  You know, it reminds me of the old Bob Dylan lyric: “the only thing I know how to do is to keep on keepin’ on.”  Keep on, Dusty!  #utahbirdies

In my time off I have done a lot of fishin.  I caught this guy out of my kayak on the Ocmulgee River just south of Forsyth, GA.  It is a shoal shark, and they are taking over the Ocmulgee River.  Not sure what the GA DNR is gonna do about these shoal sharks, but hopefully we can get them gone.  Regardless, this is a nice fish.

While I was in Mexico Beach I saw this couple walking down the sidewalk.  If you like Jay-Z, you will “get” this photo, and you will probably laugh your a$# off.  If you don’t dig Jay-Z, don’t worry about it.  Personally, I think this pic is hysterical.

The dude’s shirt says “99 problems” and the chick’s shirt says “Not 1.”

After 5 days at the beach with my kiddos they had to go home.  But since I had a few more days to kill, I went back to the beach and hung out with Lindy and her boys.  This is how I rode from Macon to the beach.

Mucho gracias to John Brewer for the ride in the Piper Lance.  It was a very smooth ride and I enjoyed flying the plane for a bit from the co-pilot’s seat as we dodged in and out of South Georgia thunderstorms.  Nice way to ride.  #notcaddylife  Much smother than the ride in this Escalade……………

It was cool to fly over Lake Blackshear.

I know you can’t see it too well in this pic, but that is the Ga/Fla parkway (300) crossing the lake and Lake Blackshear Resort on the right and the marina on the left.  Stripling’s is about 1/2 mile to the right of this pic.  Y’all GA folks will know that famous General Store!

While at Mexico Beach, Lindy landed a nice shark and Avery landed a nice sheepshead.

I hope to be back on the bag soon, but more than anything, I hope that Little Broski can put together 4 good rounds in Utah!

Tues in Indiana

My name is Adam but folks call me Bubba.

Greetings from Evansville, Indiana!  It is very hot here.  Temp has been in the mid-90’s all week and the forecast for Day 1 of the tourney is 103.  Bring it.  Feels like GA to me!  Feels like home!  You better believe I’ll be wearing my Nike wik-away Dri Fit shirts this week.  Those are cool shirts…..cool as in they look cool and cool as in they keep you cool.

I drove back thru St Louie on the way to Indiana, snapped a couple more pics from the cab of Betsy.

We are playing at the Victoria National Golf Club this week and what a tract it is!  The course is one of the best and most challenging we’ve seen all year.  You better not miss any fairways or else you will be in a hazard or in the quagmire.

And you better hit it to the correct quadrant of the green or else you will probably 3-putt.  These greens are HUGE with tons of undulation and slopes.  Luckily the book is perfect this week and the drawings of the greens are very accurate, now we just need to hit it to the right spots!

Had a great practice round Mon and Tues and then I went around the tract a couple more times making notes.  This is a real challenging course and it’s a lot of work to get all the numbers.  It is a great course though, and I’m lookin forward to seeing what these pros can do.  I tell ya one thing…..the cut ain’t gonna be 4 under like it was last week…matter of fact…the winning score might be 4 under on this course.  This is gonna be fun.

Our host family is wonderful.  Steven and Annette have cooked for us every night and are bending over backwards to make us feel comfortable.  Annette has cleared her schedule to pick us up at the course when needed or get us groceries or do whatever it is that we need to be comfortable.  She is such a sweetheart!  She is also a good player and picked up a few tips from Dusty and Goldberg on the swing at her course the other night.  She really loves to play and is so excited to have us here….really makes us feel at home.

Steven is an attorney here in Evansville and is very proud of his Italian heritage.  His favorite golfer is Freddie Couples, another Italian of course.  Steven has a very impressive collection of golf books, he is somewhat of a golf historian and his knowledge of the game is impressive.  It has been lots of fun talking trivia and current events with this crew!  I love my Indiana family for this week!

They took us to dinner tonight at a spot where Abe Lincoln visited in 1825 for a meal.  It was a great local country-cookin kinda joint with all you can eat fried chicken, corn, green beans, corn, cole slaw, and corn.  Of course corn.  If I had 1/10 of a penny for every stalk of corn I pass between our house and the course I would be the richest man in the world.  In the world.  The whole world.  (there’s lots of corn here)

OK, so caddies are always treated as second-class citizens on this Tour, until this week.  I’m not sure, but I think this is gonna be the caddy tent for the week.  If so, get some.  U can’t touch dis.

Not many funny stories thus far….we’ve spent all day every day on the course grinding it out and working on the game and familiarizing ourselves with the tract.  Can’t wait to get it on!

My favorite thing about this pic is that you can tell my little guy is smiling underneath the goofy teeth.  So cute.  Miss these two dudes.

Check out this old pic.  This is Lally and Dusty about 20 years ago.  A lot has happened since then!  Sweet hair Dusty.  Also a nice tee-shirt-tuck-in.  You got style.  Always have.

Lookin fwd to a great week in Evansville.

Happy Birthday Lally Henley!

My name is Adam but folks call me Bubba.

Happy Birthday to my sweet mama Lally Henley!  She is a great mama, grandmother, friend, travel agent, and just an all round cool chick.  Happy 42nd Birthday, Lally!!

Greetings from a shady Super 8 Motel in Mt Vernon, Illinois.  Never thought I’d be in Mt Vernon, IL, but here I am.  One thing I like about IL is there is no helmet law.  I went for a jog this morning (it’s 100 degrees here) and I saw lots of folks ridin motorcycles with no helmets.  I once did that in the great State of South Carolina and it just makes me happy when I see people riding with no helmets.  Don’t get me wrong, motorcycles are dangerous and a good way to get killed, but I sure did enjoy owning one a few years ago, and I especially enjoyed riding with no helmet.  OK, that’s about all I can say for Mt Vernon, IL……

The Wichita Open has great local support.  Check out these nice crowds on Thurs and Fri.  The winds died down and the conditions were perfect for the first two rounds.  Lots of sunshine and blue skies, it was great to be out there.  It was a lot of fun to play with Tour veteran Skip Kendall and his caddy Austin.  Those guys were a lot of fun to be around, we had a great time the first two days.  I really like Skip Kendall, even if he does play with a yellow golf ball……

It was also a lot of fun to play with Casey Wittenberg the first two rounds.  OK, that’s not true.  Let me re-phrase.  It was a lot of fun to “watch” Casey Wittenberg play the first two rounds.  You don’t really “have fun with” Casey Wittenberg on the golf course.  He is 100% business 100% of the time.  But it obviously works for him.  He’s in contention this week and he finished T-10 at The US Open last week.  Do it Casey.  He has a real cool caddy Benjy and we enjoyed a lot of laughs the first two rounds.  Hope to get to work with Benjy again soon, or at least get a beer with him soon!

I am happy to report a victory in both of my Caddy Races.  The first day I got a sneak attack head start on the other 2 caddies and beat them by a hair.  #norules  The second day there was a little pushing and shoving on the way to the green but I was able to get a foot on the green first after I pulled off a little move called a “7-iron trip” on the caddy who looked like he was going to beat me.  Whatever it takes.  It’s not how you play the game, it’s whether you win or loose.  Caddy Race Team Win.

In the past two weeks I have been to Leon, Mexico, Mexico Beach, and Mexico, Missouri.  I wonder if anyone else in the world has been to those 3 places in the last couple weeks?

Left on Sat morning with Steveo drivin to Evansville, Indiana for the next tourney.  It’s only a 10 hour ride……but cheaper than flying…  #caddylife

On Fri night the neighbors of my host family invited a big crew of us over to their house.  They cooked homemade pizzas which were awesome.  Tim, the man of the house, made the pizza dough from scratch, made the sauce from scratch, added all the fresh ingredients, and then handed them off to his buddy who cooked the pies on the Green Egg.  I’ve never had pizza cooked on an Egg before, they were awesome!  This community showed all of us such hospitality, it was great to make some good buddies in Wichita!  Many many thanks to Mama Sue and JD our hosts, and mainly thanks to Sophie AKA Mrs. Beagie, the other member of their family.

I know it’s not easy to put up with my bro and me, or any members of the Nationwide Tour Traveling Circus of Fools, and we really appreciate your friendship!

Something really cool happened on #7 on Thurs.  Dusty hit a really skanky hook 3-iron on the short par 4 that started way right, hooked across the fairway, and almost went into the water hazard.  Then he had a 4-iron into the green and he cold-shanked it out of the rough and directly into another water hazard……SPLASH!  So we go up and drop it in some more thick rough and I paced off the yardage, he had 46 to the hole.  He was making a royal mess of this hole, but he did not get mad about it.  Any ammeter like me would get really upset and probably hit another in the water or skull one over the green or hit another terrible shot and probably make a quad, but not Dusty.  Just before he hits the shot he looks up at me and says “10 push-ups if this goes in.”  I say “Sure” but I’m thinking to myself “no chance.”  Well, of course he pures it out of the rough and the dern ball one-hops into the bottom of the hole.  Our host family were around the green along with a lot of other fans who all went crazy.  Dusty looked at me with a dead straight stoic face and said “Gimme 10.”  I hit the ground right there in the rough and pushed out `10 and was glad to do it!  #keepitlight  Just goes to show what a pro Dusty is bc if he would have gotten upset about that hole he would have never been able to focus and hole it out from 46.  Solid par dude.  Mark it 4.

In two weeks we are playing in Salt Lake City and there is a little contest called Mustache Madness.  Everyone grows out their staches in honor of some charity, I think it’s MD or something like that.  Well, you can imagine how much I love this.  The Fu Man Chu is already begun.  I will not shave it till after Utah.  May even keep it longer than that.  We need some good breaks, maybe my Good Luck Fu Man Chu will be just what we need to get in the winner’s circle again!  Stay tuned.  #mustachewatch

My sweet mama took my little dudes to the Children’s Museum in Macon.  Check out this huge snake they got to pet.

Grosses me out, but my little guys liked it!  Gotta love little boys!  #missthoseguys  I am ready to get to Indiana for the next event, ready to check out a new course, and ready to do everything I can to help me little bro play well.  But I am also looking fwd to next week when I get to see my boys and take them to the beach again.  It is tough to be away from those boys, but we make the best of our time together.  Also I’m glad there is a 4-month off-season when I will be with them a lot more.  They are such good little dudes!

I didn’t get a chance to wear my good luck Kent Wool pink socks this week.  I wear them only on Sundays, so I plan to wear them in the final group this Sun afternoon in Indiana.  They look really smooth with my Nike Air Max 2 kicks.

It’s becoming obvious to me that #caddylife can be real tough, especially out here in the minor leagues.  Three of my good buddies have split with their players in the past few weeks.  That is always sorta sad for me but these guys just keep on truckin and find another bag.  Gotta keep on keeping on.   It’s a Doggy-Dogg World out here.  (is that the right phrase?  You know what I mean)

Tues in Wichita

My name is Adam but people call me Bubba.

So, I’ve always heard it’s windy in Kansas.  Fact.  Really windy.  As in, it was blowin 30-40.  All day.  The last two days.  Nuttin like I’ve ever seen.  It was blowin a PW 30 yards on the range.  It was actually sorta cool.  Dusty hit a high cut 3W yesterday that was hit well, cut about 25 yards to the right, then the wind caught it and sent it about 40 yards back to the left.  Talk about a screwball!  I hope the wind blows and blows and blows this week to separate all the chumps from the playas.  The course is in great shape and this is going to be a real fun week.

As windy as it’s been the past couple of days it has also been blue sky and sunshine the whole time.  It’s been in the 90′s but it doesn’t feel hot bc of all the wind.  I think I mentioned in my last blog that I broke my shades in Mexico last week so I was real excited that Catfish the Nike rep had a new pair for me this week.  OK….now I admit that I plug Nike stuff, but I think it’s the best, and I really like it.  I just like all the Nike gear.  But let me tell you, these new shades are a life-changer.  Best shades I’ve ever worn.  These put Costas and RayBans to shame.  They are called Nike Show X2 glasses, Nike Max Optics, black with the black lenses.  I really love them.  If you see them somewhere, I recommend picking up a pair.  I just hope I can make it the rest of the year without breakin this pair!

So, the last leg of my road trip adventure was from Lee’s Summit, MO through Kansas City and on down here to Wichita.  That entire stretch of 4 hours can be summed up with these 4 pics that I snapped from the cab of my truck.

Flat and boring.  Sorta like this chick I used to date back in college…..

There is no doubt that #caddylife is challenging.  It’s sometimes tough to be on The Road, sometimes boring and lonely, and in my case, it really stinks to be away from my kiddos.  For sure, #caddylife is #notforeveryone.  However, this week is an exception.  We cruised into our host housing this week and made our way to the basement where we encountered the coolest, biggest, and baddest TV I have ever seen in my life.  My boy John and his wife Sue go with an 84-inch Blue Ray.  I know it is dark, but check out this pic of the TV with me standing beside it on the right for scale.

JACKPOT!  84-inches of viewing pleasure.  Just watched some of the NBA Finals on that bad boy and I’m thinking to myself “maybe one day……….”

Our hosts are really cool too.  They cooked us BBQ sandys last night and some great chicken parm tonight.  We are about 4 min from the course.  Sweet location, outgoing funny hosts, super-nice accommodations, #caddylife ain’t so bad this week!  John and Sue have this sign in their basement.

In case you can’t read it, it says, “A good friend will bail you out of jail, but a true friend will be sitting right next to you sayin ‘Damn…that was fun!’”

I like Kansas.

The fun folks in Witchita have an event every year during this tourney called “Caddy Races.”  Oh yea.    #17 is a long par 3, plays about 220 uphill and surrounding the green are more bleachers than we’ve seen all year.  It is a two-story mountain of bleachers surrounding the green.

Well, supposedly each day during the tourney there are bets made by the fun folks in the stands on which caddy will make it to the green first.  I’ve heard there is a bookie who actually takes bets on the color of the bibb that the caddy is wearing and which caddy will win the race.  The only rules:  the bag has to be on your back the whole time and whoever touches the green first wins.  As soon as all the players hit their shots the caddys take off in a dead sprint for the green.  Wow.  I can’t wait.  Talk about right up my ally!?!?!?  I am so confident that I will predict an undefeated 4 days for Yours Truly.  In the words of Kid Rock, “It ain’t braggin if you back it up.”  I may be a little overweight and I may appear to be a little chubby and slow, but really I’m quick.  Quick like a cat.  Sneaky quick.  Can’t wait for Caddy Races, watch out other slow caddies, Bubba got dis.

After spending last week with my little boys it’s been real hard being away from them the past few days.  Luckily I only have this week and then next week in Indiana and then I pick them up again and we go for another beach trip.  Should be fun!  Many thanks to my wonderful mama for sending me pics of them from the past few days, I love these little troublemakers!!!

I’m not exactly sure what Dave was making that he had to wear this hard hat, but the construction project obviously wore him out.

Miss my little buddies!

The course is par 71 and is right there in front of us.  No tricky or Mickey Mouse holes.  Just hit a smart position shot off the tee, hit it to the correct quadrant of the green, and send whitey to his home!  This is gonna be fun.

The Beach, JC, J4, & Rehberg

My name is Adam but it seems like everyone calls me Bubba.

Today is my birthday!  As of today I am officially halfway to 70…..the good half….oh well….age is just a number right?  Even though I am 35 now I feel like I’m 20 and those of you who know me will agree that I act like I’m 14.  I hope that never changes!

Greetings from Lee’s Summit, Missouri.  Never heard of Lee’s Summit until about an hour ago.  I’m about 30 min short of Kansas City and about 3 hours short of my final destination for the week, Wichita, Kansas.  Since I created this blog, please excuse me if I take a little creative liberty with this post.  This could be a long one……but hang with me I’ll try to make it interesting.  I haven’t had a chance to look at this website since I got back from Mexico and a lot has happened since then.  Speaking of Mexico, muchias congrats to my boy Lee Williams for winning The Mexico Open.   Great job Lee!  Even though you are an Auburn guy, I still like ya, and am happy for your win!  The last day in Mexico I saw this sign at the hotel…..I don’t speak enough Spanish to figure it out…..any ideas???

I didn’t think so…

After The Mexico Open I went straight to get my boys and we went straight to the beach with Lindy.  I missed them so much and it was great to spend a week with those little jokers.  They were so good and so much fun at the beach, I am a lucky Daddy!

I broke my Nike Vision 20XI sunglasses last week at the beach….I hope Catfish the Nike rep has a spare pair this week, all those Nike Vision shades are perfect for the course…..need another pair!!

When I got back from Mexico Beach I spent a day in Macon working and then a night out with some of my best buddies:  JC, Megan, J4, Beth, and Lindy.  We all had a great night out at Fish N Pig then Shammy.  We had a lot to celebrate…..Megan and I share the same birthday, J4 and Beth were celebrating being newlyweds, JC has a lot of great things going on with his music, and Lindy took the first shot of her life at dinner.  Lots to be happy about!

After a week at the beach I was on The Road again.  Left Macon in Betsy (my 2004 Chevy truck with 213,000 miles) on Sat and made it to Nashville where I spent the night with my best old buddy Will Rehberg and his lovely wife Nikki and his two cute kiddos Bo and Helen.  Bo is my boy.  As far as 5 year old little dudes go, Bo is solid.  We went bowling and I tried as hard as I could and I beat Bo by one point, 84 to 83.   Will and Helen also bowled, but the real competition was between Bo and me.

I don’t get to see The Rehberg Clan as much as I would like so it was real special for me to hang with my old buddies.  Then up early on Sun (AKA Father’s Day AKA my birthday) and hit the road.  Made it here to Lee’s Summit after about 11 hours of driving time.  Still got a few more hours to go, but glad to have the majority of this road trip under my belt.  I got into 2 traffic jams on the way that consisted of about 30 min of stop and go traffic.  I assume wrecks, but I never saw why the traffic was so slow.  Also went through two stretches of basically ZERO radio stations:  between Nashville and Paducha, KY and then between St Louis and Kansas City.  Those were tough runs.  Really made me miss my XM Radio.  I am sick of all of the CD’s that I have in Betsy, so it was a boring ride.  All the players have plenty of money so they fly to all the tourneys. We caddys don’t have money so we drive.  #caddylife  #notforeveryone  Although, I am having the time of my life on The Road….so many adventures so far and so many coming up.  I’m a lucky dude.

I got a few good snapshots from the cab of my truck as I was passing through The Gateway to the West, The Arch in St Louis.

Real proud of my boys at the US Open.  JP, Al Presnal, Scotty Langs all had great events.  Real proud of you boys!  Also, I hate to say anything negative about a fellow professional athlete (that’s got to be bad karma but I can’t help it).  Jim Furyk, are you serious with that 5-Hour-Energy-Drink hat, or is that just a joke?  Come on dude.  If Chirs Berman were to describe that hat he’d say “C’mooooooonnnnnnnnn Man!!!!”

I really like these two pics.

Way to go Webb Simpson.  Great guy, great player, very deserving US Open Champion.  Also a much more interesting dude than Jim Furyk or Tiger or most of those other dorks.  Would have been nice to see Greame or JP win it, but I’m glad that Webb was able to close it out.  I’m sure the USGA are real proud of themselves to have the winning score over par……wonder if they are proud now that they dissed John Peterson for the 2011 Walker Cup???  Still one of the biggest screw-ups by any committee of “professional” golf committee EVER.  JP deserved the Walker Cup more than I deserve to win the Mega Millions….ok….maybe not the best analogy….but JP deserved to be on that team!

My mama got a new dog last week.  Here is Zach with my big dude Carter.

The Mechanic is the man.  There is no golfer cooler than The Mechanic.  He is such a Spaniard.  Dustin Johnson thinks he’s cool bc he likes the snow, but he can’t even hang with The Mechanic.  Just look.

#miguelangel  #sweetpony

Dusty and Carter finally found something they have in common:  a strong strong love for La Berry.

Can’t wait to meet our host family for this week in Witicha, John and Sue.  Hope ya’ll are ready for the Nationwide Traveling Circus of Fools!  We’ll  be on our best behavior!  Promise!!

Lookin fwd to getting back to work tomorrow!  Another course, another challenge, another opportunity to excel.
